Whitehorse, Yukon (February 17th, 2022) – Mount Nansen Remediation Limited Partnership (MNRLP) is pleased to announce the completed purchase of the Mount Nansen Mine site from the Receiver, PricewaterhouseCoopers. MNRLP is a partnership between Ensero Solutions Inc. and JDS Energy & Mining Inc.
As of September 24, 2021, MNRLP is carrying out Care and Maintenance activities at the site and pursuing the design and regulatory processes, such as assessment under the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act (YESAA) to remediate contamination from past mining activities. Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) will maintain an oversight role for the duration of the remediation project. MNRLP and CIRNAC will continue ongoing consultation with the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation and the Government of Yukon.
The completion of the sale process is the product of many years of collaborative work between the MNRLP, CIRNAC, the Government of Yukon, and the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation. By participating in this project, MNRLP will advance responsible clean-up of the abandoned Mount Nansen site, while developing economic opportunities for the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation and surrounding Yukon communities.
MNRLP entered into a Remediation and Security Agreement (RASA) with Canada as part of the sale, governing how MNRLP will remediate the site. This ensures that the clean-up will benefit all Yukoners and the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation. MNRLP and CIRNAC are committed to the protection of the health and safety of Northerners and the northern environment.
“The Little Salmon/ Carmacks First Nation is pleased to be working on a consultation process and the implementation of community recommendations. In a recent meeting with Mount Nansen Remediation Limited Partnership, it was agreed upon to move forward in this good way. The waters of the BYG mine have been a long-standing concern for the community of Carmacks and the traditional harvesting and gathering area of Mount Nansen. In working together, we look forward to the remediation the Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation has been waiting for since 1999.” – Chief Nichole Tom, Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation
“With the completed sale of the Mount Nansen Mine site, this project can now move toward assessment, permitting and remediation. Our strong partnerships are our greatest assets, and we look forward to continuing our work together to clean up the Mount Nansen Mine site, and to ensure Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation, other First Nations and Yukoners benefit from this important project.” – The Honourable Daniel Vandal, P.C., M.P., Minister of Northern Affairs
“MNRLP is pleased to have reached this important milestone and look forward to continuing to advance remediation of the Mount Nansen site with Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation and Government of Canada, which will generate long-lasting benefits.” – Jim Harrington, CEO Ensero Solutions and Jeff Stibbard, CEO JDS Group
