Mia Otto, Ph.D., R.P.Bio, has been working in the field of freshwater ecology for more than 15 years, internationally and locally, and leads Ensero’s Fisheries and Aquatic Resources team. Mia's expertise includes environmental effects assessments, ecological research and compliance monitoring, and developing management strategies for aquatic receiving environments. A particular area of focus for her work has been permitting and licensing within the mining sector. Her doctoral studies focused on evaluating periphyton communities across ecological gradients in Southern Africa.

Mia has a particular interest in aquatic effects assessments and uses multivariate statistical approaches in developing localized reference conditions, mitigations, and innovative solutions for clients with projects that has the potential to interact with the aquatic receiving environment. Mia’s extensive experience working on aquatic projects across three continents and more than a dozen countries to date has help develop her as an experienced aquatic ecologist that approaches assessment and monitoring programs from a holistic multi-disciplinary perspective. Mia is very skilled at designing and conducting baseline characterizations and effects assessments, instream flow needs assessments that quantifies the amount and types of fish habitat potentially affected, guiding clients through DFO review processes, and crafting digestible, defensible technical reports for regulators, public stakeholders, and First Nations engagement.
