Our Approach to Process Engineering & Treatment
Water treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all and neither is our approach. Our process engineering team partners closely with clients to design optimized, efficient treatment solutions that meet both technical and regulatory needs. We balance innovation with practicality to deliver results you can count on.

Water treatment is critical to project success and that no two projects are exactly alike. That’s why our Process Engineering & Treatment services are built around flexibility, innovation, and real-world practicality. We begin with comprehensive in-situ and ex-situ options assessments to evaluate treatment pathways and optimize outcomes. Our concept-level (30%) process engineering services help clients design efficient, cost-effective systems, while our condition and technology assessments ensure that existing infrastructure can meet future needs. We also conduct detailed CAPEX/OPEX assessments to support sound financial planning. From upgrades to full operational support, our team delivers water treatment solutions that are robust, reliable, and adaptable to evolving requirements. Whether it’s a new build, a retrofit, or ongoing operations, we work side by side with our clients to ensure that every system delivers lasting performance.
Our Expert
A successful water treatment project seeks to understand the challenges and opportunities sufficiently to screen for the best possible options. Our experienced team manages conceptual studies so the owner can confidently deliver on environmental commitments while balancing project performance. We drive value engineering and broad risk mitigation as the project stage progresses towards detailed design, operations, and ultimately remediation.

Concept Stage Assistance:
-
Beginning at the concept stage, we assist with understanding the available treatment options through structured options assessments that cover the full range of solutions, including both active and passive options implemented in situ or via treatment plants. When treatment is planned within the context of a well-considered water management strategy, novel and powerful options to improve effectiveness and reduce costs present themselves. For example, we have found:
-
In situ treatment options for stored water have allowed our clients to avoid raising dams and building treatment plants altogether.
-
Phased approaches where bulk pre-treatment of stored water in situ makes physical/chemical treatment through a plant easier or less expensive.
-
Integrated management and treatment strategies that address separate water sources needing different types of treatment or water that will change in quality or quantity over time.
-
Conceptual (30%) Design:
Once options are clear, Ensero can deliver a project's conceptual (30%) design. These designs are developed with trade-off studies, culminating in multi-criteria decision-making evaluations (MCDA’s).
Optimization of Existing Treatment Plants:
When treatment systems already exist, we offer reviews and recommendations to optimize existing water treatment plants. We provide everything from initial conditions assessments that generally lead to improvements in efficiency or effectiveness, to full process and technology reviews. These reviews consider whether the processes and technologies in place continue to meet the treatment needs most efficiently in light of ongoing technological advancements and/or potentially evolving process challenges.
Upgrading and Modernizing Treatment Processes:
We excel at upgrading, modernizing, or rethinking water treatment processes. We also continually look for opportunities to ramp down or transition to passive or hybrid active-passive solutions.
Operational Insights:
Our insights into optimal treatment solutions are greatly informed by the fact that we operate treatment plants across North America at various stages of operation or closure. We have developed an effective model that matches skilled operators with strong back-office engineering support in a real-time collaboration environment, maximizing operational reliability and continuous process improvement. Our junior engineers often assist with troubleshooting and upgrades, rotating in to support treatment operations, ensuring that our designs are always informed by real-world operating experience.
